Group dynamics however can be complex with multiple underlying processes that will influence how effectively people work together. Tuckman’s theory of group development, published in 1965 identifies 5 distinct stages.

  • Forming
  • Norming
  • Performing
  • Adjourning

1 Group Storming

When a small group of individuals first come together it takes time for individual roles and personalities to become apparent. During this stage individuals will seek to relate to each other and share information about themselves either directly or through the projection of their personality. This is generally a tumultuous time but should progress forwards to the next forming stage.

2 Group Forming

The group of individual can now identify themselves and others as members of the same time. During this stage structure and hierarchy will be defined. This stage often causes conflict as members fight for their preferred position and attempt to prove themselves suited to a particular role. Team members may be defensive and resistant, clashing with others due to differences in things like personality and communication skills.

Negotiation is often helpful at this stage to ensure that all group members are relatively happy with their position in the group, perceived or otherwise.

3 Group Norming

The group is now established and can begin working together. Individual roles will be clarified and essentially all the foundations will now be put into place to allow the group to begin working together to achieve their goal(s).

4 Group Performing

This stage involves the group performing in order to meet their goals. The focus during this stage is upon performance and getting things done. Group members will often need to interact with each other in order to complete tasks and individuals at this stage should be working to support each other, rather than hinder the tasks progress.

Roles during this stage are generally highly function oriented, think of a well oiled machine operating with all the component parts working harmoniously together to move forwards.

5 Group Adjourning

This final stage involves completion of the task and the team members once again becoming individuals as the team is disbanded.

Clearly there are many elements of teams working together that could present potential problems that can hinder a groups ability to move forwards and operate effectively, damaging the groups cohesion.
